May believes in analytics, plus can bring help right away

Florida Atlantic played a lot of smart basketball this season. The Owls generally do a lot of things you want in order to win basketball games under May. They shot a lot of 3-pointers, limited transition attempts of opponents, and got quality shots, as well as limiting quality shots. According to UMHoops, the Owls were 12th in offensive shot quality and sixth in defensive shot quality.

That put FAU among the top 10 teams in the country in that stat, which puts them in the same category as UConn, Arizona, Kansas, and some other mid-major programs like Indiana State.

It doesn't mean that success will translate to Michigan, but there is a lot to like beyond the recruiting philosophy. There should be plenty of ball movement and passing. In many ways, from on the court, to how the roster is built, Michigan will feel much more like it did when John Beilein was the head coach.

Florida Atlantic's three best players, Johnell Davis, Alijah Martin, and Vladislav Goldin are all graudates with an extra year due to COVID. They could follow their coach and transfer to Michigan basketball. We'll see if that happens. There will be other opportunities too but if May could bring some players with him, it could accelerate a rebuild and have U-M back in NCAA tournament contention quicker than any of us expected.
