3 thoughts on commitment of Phillip Wright to Michigan football
Michigan football continued to build momentum in the 2025 class and added the commitment of three-star wide receiver Phillip Wright on Saturday.
Wright is from Louisiana and the Tigers made a late push for him. That's a push that could continue after this commitment, but that's another topic for another day.
The 5-foot-11,175-pound receiver is ranked No. 541 overall in the 2025 class and 86th among wide receivers which seems crazy to me. When you watch his highlights, you see a dynamic player who can just about do it all. He runs the 10.46 in the 100-meter dash and here are three thoughts on what this commitment means for Michigan football.
The speed is no joke
What's the old saying, you can't coach speed? That's true and Wright has it. 10.46 is incredible in the 100-meter dash and Wright uses that speed to take the top off of the defense.
Not only can he stretch the field, he's a return guy and he excels in screens. You see a number of plays where he gets a screen or a handoff and gets to the edge. Then, it's game over.
Wright sort of reminds of me of Semaj Morgan. LSU made a push late and I'm not surprised at all. Like Jasper Parker, Wright should be ranked higher and I wouldn't be surprised at all if his ranking improves before signing day.
At any rate, Wright is exactly the kind of three-star recruit you want in your class.
LSU "turned up the heat" at the end
The final three included LSU, Michigan football, and Georgia. But the biggest threat wasn't from Georgia, it was from LSU according to Sam Webb of The Michigan Insider, who posted that the Tigers "turned up the heat" down the stretch.
LSU has missed on a few wide receiver targets recently, so it wouldn't be surprising to see the Tigers keep pushing for Wright, but Michigan did a great job of fending off the Tigers, who the Wolverines can add to a list of SEC foes they have beaten for recruits recently which also includes Georgia, Florida, and Alabama.
Georgia wasn't super involved in the end but LSU was and Webb reported they aren't giving up either.
The blue-chip ratio dips slightly
Michigan football was at 86 percent before Wright's commitment, but I wouldn't worry. He's got all the skills of a blue chip. Morgan was also a three-star and he produced early in his Michigan football career.
Wright still has time to improve his ranking but even if he remains a four-star, the Wolverines have a healthy blue-chip ratio and you can feel even better about when you land a three-star like Wright.
