Michigan basketball head coach Dusty May is the hottest name in the basketball coaching world, for good reason.

He just led the Wolverines to a 37-3 record and their first national championship since 1989. He also did it by developing two players, who mostly came off the bench for other teams in 2024-25, and turning them into first-round picks. Elliot Cadeau, a North Carolina castoff, won Most Outstanding Player in the Final Four.

Teams have taken notice. North Carolina tried to lure May away before he rebuffed their advances. Now, some NBA teams are rumored to have interest. The Orlando Magic are chief among those teams. They just blew a 3-1 series lead against the Detroit Pistons, leading them to fire their head coach.

Orlando is known for having a simple offense. So, Dusty May would be a good fit, especially with all the young talent on that roster, which includes former Michigan basketball star, Franz Wagner.

NBA insiders shoots down Dusty May to NBA chatter

However, before that rumor had a chance to grow into something serious, NBA insider Shams Charania of ESPN shot it down on the Pat McAfee Show.

“I particularly don’t see Dusty May [being the next Orlando Magic head coach]. He has a good thing going at Michigan.” Charania said.

May won the national championship in his second season as Michigan's head coach. The Wolverines went 19-1 in Big Ten play and became the first team in conference history to go 10-0 on the road in the Big Ten.

May is focused on adding players from the portal to reload for another championship run, and if you believe Shams, there's no concern about Dusty leaving for the Orlando Magic.
