Needing a win to bolster their NCAA tournament resume, the Michigan Wolverines upset Michgan State for the second time this season.
Earlier in the season, Michigan hockey knocked off No. 1 Michigan State. On Friday night, with the Spartans ranked No. 2, 13th-ranked Michigan hockey got a key goal late from Garrett Schifsky, on a rebound with 57 seconds left to escape East Lansing with a 2-1 win.

Cameron Korpi came up big for Michigan hockey between the pipes, turning away 38 of 39 shots that he faced. The Wolverines are sitting in fourth place in the Big Ten, four points clear of Wisconsin and three points behind Ohio State for third place.
Michigan hockey (16-11-2) will take on Michigan State again on Saturday night at 8 PM EST in the Duel in the D. Michigan leads the season series 2-1.
Michigan football offers Ohio quarterback in 2026
Ever since the commitment of Bryce Underwood, which led to Brady Hart flipping to Texas A&M, Michigan football has been scrambling a little bit in terms of 2026 quarterback recruiting.
There are a few targets on the board and offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey is doing work on the recruiting trail but one recent offer to pay attention to was to Ohio four-star quarterback Matt Ponatoski.
Ponatoski is 6-foot-2, 190 pounds, and out of Cincinnati. He's ranked No. 229 in the 2026 class according to the 247 Sports composite rankings. He's also ranked as the No. 15 quarterback.
He's not on the radar of Ohio State yet, but the Wolverines offered recently and the dual-spot star who committed to a D-1 baseball scholarship as an eighth grader seems receptive. Michigan football also seems open to the idea of him playing football and baseball according to The Wolverine.com.
Ponatoski is a fast riser and in the past month has been offered by Texas A&M, Arkansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech, and of course, Michigan football.
This feels like a recruitment the Wolverines can win if Ponatoski becomes their priority target at the position in the 2026 class. There are more highly-ranked players on the board but Ponatoski reminds me of Carter Smith, and feels like a viable QB option for Michigan football in the 2026 class.
