The hype surrounding Michigan football quarterback Bryce Underwood has been off the charts, even before he was a Wolverine.

Underwood has always been a superstar. The Michigan Wolverines just aren't used to having a quarterback quite like this. J.J. McCarthy was elite, but it feels like Underwood is on another level, something former Michigan quarterback Jack Tuttle basically said this week on the Locked On Wolverines Podcast.

“I would say it’s hard to measure that right now, because the sky’s the limit for that kid,” Tuttle said of the Wolverines' freshman QB.

“When I saw him for the first time — I think it was January, February — throw the ball … I’ve seen quite a few QBs throw the ball. I’ve seen Trevor Lawrence — I was at The Opening like 50 years ago with him and [former Georgia and Ohio State quarterback] Justin Fields. I’ve seen all those guys … that was my class. I’ve seen a lot of good football throwers, and I’ve been with Mike Penix at Indiana, obviously, J.J. McCarthy here at Michigan. And I would say Bryce is at the top with the best of them, and probably throws it better than a lot of those guys — which is scary to say, to be honest, because he’s so young.”

Underwood has been compared to Vince Young and Cam Newton. Trevor Lawrence and Justin Fields aren't bad comparisons either. We'll see what it means for this season, but as we wrote on Thursday, too many are sleeping on the potential of this team.

Michigan football projected to land 2027 recruit

Three-star offensive lineman Tristan Dare, a 6-foot-4, 290-pounder out of Southlake, Texas, who is ranked No. 496 overall in the 2027 class, according to the 247 Sports composite rankings, has been projected to land with the Michigan Wolverines.

Dare has been trending with expert projections from Rivals/On3, as well as receiving multiple crystal balls in favor of Michigan football.

Like the Wolverines, Ohio State offered in June. Dare has nine Big Ten offers which also includes Penn State, as well as four SEC offers with Florida, Oklahoma, and Ole Miss being the most notable.

The Michigan Wolverines have one commitment in the 2027 class, three-star offensive lineman Louis Esposito. Dare could be next.

Former Michigan football QB trending to start somewhere else

Jayden Denegal, a three-star signee of the Wolverines back in the 2022 recruiting class, is expected to be the starting quarterback for San Diego State this fall.

Denegal took part in Michigan's QB competition last fall, and created some positive buzz, but never contended seriously for the job. He did have talent, though, and it's good to see that talent being put to use for the Aztecs.
