The Michigan football season is nearly two weeks away from kickoff, which means fall camp is coming to a close and the depth chart is coming more and more into view. With so many sports starting back up and classes back in session, it is easy to miss bits of news happening. Luckily, we are here to catch you up on anything you have missed regarding Michigan Athletics.
Michigan 2027 4-star QB commit Kamden Lopati opens senior season in an impressive manner
One of the biggest recruits for Kyle Whittingham in the Class of 2027 was four-star quarterback Kamden Lopati, who decommitted from Illinois before choosing the Wolverines. The No. 10 quarterback in the class recently began his senior season at Salt Lake City West and led his team to a 20-14 win over Las Vegas Arbor View.
Not only did Lopati lead his team to victory, but he did so by going 14-for-23 with 265 passing yards, one touchdown, and 80 rushing yards. In his first game of the season, those are great numbers from the Michigan commit. If he can continue to improve as the season goes on, he could climb the quarterback rankings in 2027.
Mike Boynton is leaving the door open for a Roddy Gayle return to Michigan
Michigan basketball saw a lot of change since winning a National Championship back in April, from losing the entire backcourt to the NBA, head coach Dusty May to the NBA as well, and naming assistant coach Mike Boynton as May's replacement, the Wolverines may not be done quite yet.
With the five-for-five rule now in effect for the Class of 2022 for any players who did not sign a professional contract, Michigan could see the return of Roddy Gayle, a return that has been rumored for quite some time now.
When speaking to the media recently, Boynton stated that if Gayle wanted to return to Michigan using the five-for-five rule, the door would be open to him this season. The Wolverines do technically have one roster spot open after LJ Carson chose to enter the transfer portal, so theoretically, Gayle could return to Michigan if he wanted to.
More: Micah Simon speaks on tight WR3 race in fall camp
Wide receiver coach Micah Simon was the latest Michigan coach to take the stand and speak to the media during fall camp, and he gave a lot of insight into how things are shaping up for the Wolverines. There is no question that Andrew Marsh and JJ Buchanan are the WR1 and WR2 at Michigan, but that leaves the WR3 spot open.
Simon has the tough job of selecting who will take that spot, and he says it is a tight race right now between four guys: Travis Johnson, Salesi Moa, Jaime Ffrench, and Channing Goodwin. It seems like a great problem to have, as this receiver room is very deep with talent this season.

More: Rod Moore no longer limited in fall camp, ramping up for start of 2026 season
When fall camp began, there were a few players returning from injury last season, like Rod Moore and John Henry Daley. Both were put on snap counts during practices, but Moore recently spoke to the media again and gave a good update on his snap count.
Moore revealed that the snap count is long gone, and he is pushing himself harder and harder each day, rarely taking a rep off. Now Moore is practicing every day, and he also expects to be ready for Michigan's season opener against Western Michigan.
#Michigan DB Rod Moore says the pitch count has gone out of the window as he’s now stacking days and practicing basically everyday and not taking a day off.

He adds he expects to be ready for the season opener, too.
This is a huge win for the Michigan defense that has a stacked secondary. Moore was also recently named a captain for the Wolverines, showing even further his importance to this team.
