First Duke, now UConn.
It seems like Dusty May is determined to schedule every blue-blood in college basketball. That might not be true, but what is true is that the Wolverines could have the most difficult schedule in the country again after Jon Rothstein reported a November 6 matchup between Michigan basketball and UConn in Boston.
Michigan basketball is also expected to play Duke once again next season, this time at Madison Square Garden.
Rothstein posted that Michigan and UConn were finalizing the agreement. There is no timetable for an annoucement, but usually once these things are reported, they end up happening.
Epic early season-matchup is a genius move by Dusty May
Michigan basketball fans should love the fact that May schedules these games. They are high-profile, fun to watch, and not only can they improve the NCAA Tournament resume, but they improve your chances of having success in March.
Michigan lost the game against Duke in Washington, D.C. However, it's easy to see how that game help the Wolverines beat UConn. They knew that that kind of game was going to be like, and if they did see the Blue Devils again, they would have been much more prepared.
It's a measuring stick game without any real consequences. It could be the difference between a seed, maybe. A one or a two, or being the top overall seed, and just another No. 1 seed. That's what Michigan and Duke determined in February.
In the end, that didn't matter. The experience did, though. And that's what will be great about this game for Michigan. It will be great for recruiting and will reinforce the Wolverines as a national power, which they are.
It's also just really smart. This team will have three new starters. It will need to be able to beat teams like UConn if it wants to make the Final Four in Detroit, or win a second straight national title.
There is enough talent on this roster, as is, to do that, if everything falls into place. Win or lose, playing UConn will only help this team reach its ceiling, just as the Duke game did in 2025-26.
