On Saturday afternoon, when halftime approached for the Michigan Wolverines…they had mustered zero points, and the same old movie was playing again for the Wolverines. An offense that had been outright putrid on more than one occasion this season, had once again had a lackluster output.

So, Kyle Whittingham had no choice. He had to bench Bryce Underwood and put in Tommy Carr. As if, the Wolverines fans booing in the first half wasn’t proof enough that he was without much choice.

Tommy Carr provided a much-needed spark for the Wolverines, and they came out victorious against the Penn State Nittany Lions. But what Carr did for the Wolverines was more than just provide a win. He provided a dilemma for Michigan’s new coach. Will Whittingham stick with Carr against Indiana next week, or will he go back to Underwood?

Should Michigan football go with Tommy Carr as the starting quarterback?

If the fanbase has much to say, it will be Tommy Carr without hesitation. Now, the allure and grandeur that surrounded the signing of Bryce Underwood has seemed to worn off.

Which poses a bigger question.

How much longer are the Wolverines brass going to live under the illusion that everything they have done for the past few seasons has not been ill-fated choices? Do we need to get to December to understand that point?

Bryce Underwood is not the guy. The growth that he was supposed to have in this season has not occurred and unless something drastic happens, it does not appear that it will. In a Big Ten Conference, where the Wolverines were almost relegated to the basement, there isn’t time to keep going the same way forever. What Curt Cignetti did in Indiana changed the culture, changed the expectations. What Ryan Day has done at Ohio State has created balance and almost all the time has resulted in wins.

Not to say Kyle Whittingham is not the guy for the job. Even though that is still up for discussion. The Michigan Wolverines do need a shift. Whittingham was supposed to bring a shift when he arrived, and for the better part of the beginning of the season, there wasn’t one.

On Saturday, Tommy Carr provided a much-needed spark for the game, but really, Tommy Carr showed Wolverines fans that there is no time like the present.

Michigan football cannot live in the maybe or if game.

It’s time to make the right move because college football waits for no one.
