There are plenty of reasons to be excited about the upcoming Michigan football season, and one of them is five-star running back Savion Hiter.
The freshman has been outstanding since arriving in Ann Arbor. The No. 12 overall recruit in the 2026 recruiting class, according to the 247 Sports composite rankings, enrolled early.
There were some impressive moments during the Michigan football spring game from the dynamic freshman from Virginia, but as the season gets closer, Hiter keeps looking better and better.

The 2026 season is now three weeks away, less than three weeks by the time Sunday rolls around. Michigan football held a scrimmage on Saturday, with the opener against Western Michigan approaching, and based on a social media post from the program, it looks like Hiter had a long touchdown run for the Wolverines.
Michigan might have the best running back room in college football
Michigan head coach Kyle Whittingham suggested that the Wolverines might have the best running back room in college football this season, or at least the Big Ten, and it's hard to argue.
We have to see what Hiter can do in a game, but by all accounts, he's one of the most talented running backs in Michigan football history. Jordan Marshall is no slouch either after averaging 6.9 yards per carry during Big Ten play last season.
Behind an improved offensive line, Marshall, an Ohio native, should be even better. He might be the best running back in the Big Ten this season, and if he had been 100 percent for the Ohio State game, it would have been much more interesting.
As it stands, the only thing between Marshall and being the best running back in the Big Ten might be Hiter, who could lay claim to that title by the end of the season.
Whittingham is new in Ann Arbor, so we aren't as familiar with him, but he doesn't strike me as someone who is spouting off hyperbole. The head coach has talked up Hiter since he arrived in the spring, and that hasn't changed this fall.
There is a lot of pressure on Bryce Underwood to perform and to take his game to the next level. But even if he's slightly better than last season and he's involved in the running game, with Hiter in the mix, this offense should be much improved and could be as good as anyone at running the football.
