Earlier this week, it was reported that Michigan football was among the top two contenders for transfer portal offensive tackle Shiyazh Pete.
The 6-foot-8, 320-pound offensive tackle who played over 1,700 snaps for New Mexico State, was supposed to be down to Nebraska and Michigan football.
However, things have started to trend in another direction. According to EJ Holland, and Steve Wiltfong of On3.com, Kentucky is now the favorite to land Pete, who is ranked as the No. 12 offensive tackle available in the transfer portal via 247 Sports (No. 111 overall).
Kentucky is tough to beat at times and they are committed to NIL, but Michigan football is too and with the pedigree of the Wolverines developing offensive lineman, it's hard to understand this one.
Pete still hasn't commited yet and as we have seen with this recruitment already, things can change quickly.
New O-line targets emerge for Michigan football
The good news is that Michigan football isn't standing pat. Daniel King from Troy, who just entered the transfer portal this week, is on the radar, according to a report from EJ Holland.
King was Second-Team All-Sun Belt during the 2024 season. He played 429 snaps at right tackle and 360 at right guard. The 6-foot-5, 340-pounder allowed two sacks last season and according to his profile, he was graded as one of the best run blockers in the Sun Belt.
King could play guard or tackle for Michigan football. If Andrew Sprague could handle left tackle, King could play on the right side. Another option is former Arizona offensive lineman Leif Magnuson. He started games at guard and tackle in 2023 but missed most of last season due to injury.
King would be preferable but there will be heavy interest. A commitment from King is just what the Wolverines offensive line needs but more options are becoming available each day. The biggest key is landing an experienced tackle who can play.
Pete would be an ideal addition, but there is still time for another.
