Michigan basketball head coach Dusty May has a chance to join that exclusive club of national champions on Monday night. Dan Hurley has won two championships, and beating the Huskies will be anything but easy.

Regardless of what happens, Michigan needs to lock up May long-term, with a new deal. According to Tony Garcia of the Detroit Free Press, that's close to happening.

Garcia reported that negotiations have been ongoing. May took himself out of the running to be the North Carolina head coach, and will be back in 2026-27.

The Wolverines could be the defending national champions, thanks to the incredible job done by May. He's now got 11 NCAA Tournament wins over the past four seasons. This Michigan team was his third in four years to make the Sweet 16, and second to make the Final Four.

May said the Wolverines will have their "hands full" on Saturday night after the win. That would be true of any team in the national championship game. UConn is scary because of its reputation. The Huskies are an elite team that has a mental edge because it knows how to win these games. Their head coach knows how to win these games.

If May out-duels Hurley, he will deserve every dollar he gets, even if that means being the highest-paid coach in college basketball.

That's what Michigan needs to do. At some point, the NBA is going to come calling. Probably not after this season, but in the near future. Maybe that's the one thing that could lure him away from Ann Arbor, especially if the Wolverines cut down the nets on Monday night.
