North Carolina is one of the biggest jobs in college basketball, and with Hubert Davis being fired two days before the start of the Sweet 16, it has created an interesting dynamic.
Many of the head coaches in the Sweet 16 this week have been or will be connected to the UNC opening. Michigan's Dusty May is among them. Arizona's Tommy Lloyd is another, along with T.J. Otzelberger from Iowa State.
There is also speculation about the Kansas job. Bill Self said after the season that he wasn't sure if he was going to come back. Kansas is another blue blood job, right along with Duke and Kentucky.
So that would make the coaching carousel very interesting. Even the UNC job being open isn't normal. This isn't Roy Williams retiring either. The Tar Heels will be running a national search, and yes, May has been mentioned by Matt Norlander of CBS Sports as a potential candidate. Brad Stevens of the Celtics was another, so keep that in mind.
Dusty May is "happy" as Michigan basketball head coach
Before the UNC even opened up, though, May was asked by Zach Gelb if he would consider any other jobs, almost predicting what was going to happen, and here is what the Michigan basketball head coach said:
“I’m incredibly happy at Michigan. We love Ann Arbor. This place has been great to us, it’s made us feel like home.”
May has Michigan as a No. 1 seed. The Wolverines are a legitimate contender to win the national championship if they can avoid an upset against Alabama later this week, and it's hard to see May leaving for any college job after two seasons.
Maybe the NBA will be of interest to him. Either way, Michigan should make it a moot point and sign him to a lucrative extension.
