Michigan Basketball: 3 takeaways from a runaway win over Miami (OH)
By Nick Popio
In the opening round of the Fort Meyers tipoff, Michigan basketball glided to a 27-point victory over Miami of Ohio. They'll have one more tune-up before they travel down to Florida on Thanksgiving week to see if they can bring home the trophy. Virginia Tech, Xavier, or South Carolina will be standing in their way of getting the two wins needed to do so. Xavier is the only unblemished one of the bunch and they just handled Wake Forest by 15.
Here are three of the takeaways from the night cap.
1. Dusty May's early mass substitutions
Just three minutes into the contest coach May had seen enough of the starters and the turnovers. He went with five fresh faces from the bench to swap out all of the starters. The turnovers were adding up at a rapid pace again and he had to send a stern message to his starters that enough was enough.
So, without hesitation, the first thing the reserves did was turn it over. Will Tschetter was whistled for traveling. Eventually they regrouped and grabbed the lead once the starters would return, but Miami kept it tight until the last couple minutes of the opening half. The maize and blue went on a big run and it didn't stop until the clock struck zero.
For those wondering, the Wolverines turned it over 11 times in the first 16 minutes and once more in the final four minutes of the half. They had 18 for the record, while the RedHawks only had 13. Playing at the pace that they do will result in that, but with more repetitions it should become like clock work.
