There were a few nervous moments for Michigan basketball on Monday night as the Wolverines allowed Miami (Ohio) to hang around for a half.
Then, a burst of scoring in the second half, sparked by some stellar 3-point shooting (14 makes in the game) allowed Michigan basketball to turn a competitive game into a runaway. The Wolverines covered the spread in the win and are now 3-1 on the season under first-year head coach Dusty May.
Nimari Burnett was the high scorer for Michigan basketball with 18 points. He was 7-of-10 from the field and made four 3-pointers. Tre Donaldson made three from downtown on his way to 16 points, while Roddy Gayle added 10.
L.J. Cason scored 11 off the bench. Will Tschetter had nine and hit twice from beyond the arc. Michigan had too many turnovers (18) and allowed 11 treys to the RedHawks, as well as 14 assists on 26 field goals.
The offense was stellar though shooting 58 percent from the field and 48 percent from 3-point range. The turnovers are worrisome and here are gut the reactions to a 94-67 win.
First, some highlights
Gut reactions
- Miami (OH) is a team that likes to force turnovers but the Wolverines are still being too careless, led by Danny Wolf who had five more on Monday night. It still feels like it's an issue that can be fixed, to an extent. This just might not be a team that turns it over fewer than 10 times per game.
- It's fun to see Nimari Burnett playing so well. He's the definition of a 3-and-D wing but you knew in a better situation, he could thrive and he has. Burnett might be tough for Michigan basketball head coach Dusty May to keep out of starting the lineup.
- I'd still like to see more out of Vlad Goldin (eight points).
- Nine different players turned the ball over for Michigan basketball. Three players had at least three. That's a team issue.
- It was good to see Michigan take control early in the second half. In previous years, the Wolverines would have allowed the RedHawks to hang around and maybe steal an upset.
- After another buy game is next, then we'll learn a lot more during a stretch that includes games against Virginia Tech, Wisconsin, and Iowa.
