Prior to last week, Roddy Gayle was having a poor start to 2026 for Michigan basketball. Beginning in January, he had only three games with a field goal percentage over 50%, and of those games, only one of them saw him score more than five points.
Gayle also struggled with turnovers, and saw his minutes decrease. When LJ Cason went down with an injury, however, Gayle's opportunity suddenly returned.
With no LJ Cason, Roddy Gayle, and Trey McKenney are being asked to fill the gap. There were concerns given Roddy's turnover issues and lack of ball handling experience, but through two games, Gayle has seemingly silenced those concerns.
Clutch Roddy Gayle is back for Michigan at just the right time
Against Iowa, in 21 minutes Gayle shot 3-4 from the field and had only one turnover. Most importantly, he was a menace on defense. There's a real argument to be made that Michigan loses that game without Gayle's defensive heroics at the end of the game. Up two, Gayle was able to make a huge block after an Iowa offensive rebound to preserve the lead.
The very next Iowa possession, Gayle was able to hit the ball off of the Iowa player, turning it over to Michigan basketball. On the final possession, he picked up All-Big Ten guard Bennett Stirtz and contested his shot well enough to force a miss.
Against Michigan State, Gayle played arguably his best game of the season. In 28 minutes, he went 4-5 from the field and shot 7-8 from the free throw line. He again only had one turnover and played great defense. He was a critical part of Michigan's victory.
After being forced into a larger role, Roddy Gayle has stepped up to the plate and delivered. He's played two of his best games of the season and should have plenty of confidence heading into tournament play. Gayle has always been an incredible defender, but with him finding his stride on offense again, he can make this Michigan basketball team even more dangerous.
Gayle showed up big in March for the Wolverines last season, and he's going to have the chance to do so again this year. And from what we've seen so far, there's no reason to doubt that he's going to show up.
