Five games into Kyle Whittingham's tenure it feels like Michigan is headed back to the dark ages.
Watching the Wolverines get beaten by Minnesota on Saturday, 20-14, was a stark reminder of the Brady Hoke era.
Kyle Whittingham, the man who was supposed to fix Michigan football after the Sherrone Moore disaster, a disaster that won nine games last season, has done the opposite.
It feels like the Whttingham era is a one-way ticket right back to the Hoke days, and not the 11-win season with a Sugar Bowl victory either.
More like year three of Hoke, when the wheels were coming off. We don't need to talk about year four, although I'm worried that's what another season of Whittingham would look like.
Things are bleak for Michigan football
So far, it has been a disaster. Bryce Underwood did look much better against Iowa. It felt like he had turned a corner. But that was fool's gold, because against Minnesota, he was lost. He couldn't see open receivers running for touchdowns.
Even on the final play of the game, he fired a ball to the Minnesota bench when he had tight end Hogan Hansen open over the middle of the field for a first down. The offensive line was as bad as the quarterback. The play calling was right there, too.
Jason Beck and Whittingham need to realize this is the Big Ten. They aren't in Utah anymore. Frankly, It's sort of shocking that they don't seem to know or understand that. Just look at the run game they are trying to use.
The schedule doesn't do Michigan any favors. It looked difficult before the season started, but with UCLA now ranked, it's even tougher, in the Big Ten at least.
The Wolverines have seven games left. Four of them are against top-25 teams: Indiana and UCLA at home, as well as Oregon and Ohio State on the road.
Michigan could easily lose all four of those games. They could win 1-2. but that's far from guaranteed after losing back-to-back games to Big Ten West teams.
Michigan has home games against Penn State and Michigan State, plus a road trip to Rutgers. Needing three wins to reach bowl eligibility, the Wolverines have no margin for error.
Six wins don't feel like a guarantee,. Far from it, after how Michigan played last Saturday. That's how bad things have gotten under Whittingham.
Whittingham said he was going to fix it, but he didn't know how long it would take.
My question is: What time does he think he has?
