If Michigan football head coach Kyle Whittingham isn't on the hot seat right now, he should be. That's how bad things have been since the start of his tenure.
The Western Michigan game, regardless of the result, was bad. Right after I said it reminded me of something we would have seen during the Brady Hoke era.
That feeling waned during the Oklahoma and Iowa games. Even though there was a fourth-quarter collapse against Iowa, it felt like a one-off.
It wasn't. Michigan wasn't even that good. The Wolverines lost to Minnesota after not scoring a single point on a drive that started in their own territory. In the last three games, Michigan has only scored two times on drives that started in its own territory.
Whittingham seems clueless. He keeps saying that he believes in Jason Beck. Maybe he believes that's the best way to win games this season, instead of giving the play-calling duties to someone else.
That makes sense, except for the fact that Jason Beck is the reason you are losing games. We'll see if that changes over the next five weeks. If not, according to CBS Sports, Whittingham could be on the way out the door.
Kyle Whittigham is actually on the hot seat
"A situation that has gotten no media attention yet but is being whispered about behind the scenes in industry circles is the one in Ann Arbor. Athletic director Warde Manuel is on the way out, and first-year coach Kyle Whittingham was a bridge hire. Could that ultimately be only a one-year bridge? It's too early to go that far, but multiple industry sources believe it is at least possible that Michigan could be back in the head-coaching market for a second consecutive cycle," said a report from CBS Sports by John Talty, Matt Zenitz and Chris Hummer.
Michigan is 4-3. The Wolverines are 1-3 in the Big Ten with games against UCLA, Oregon, Ohio State, Michigan State, and Rutgers. They are all winnable, but all feel losable, too. Even the Rutgers game, believe it or not. That's how bad the offense has been.
A loss to Rutgers might seal Whittingham's fate, although a win over Ohio State might save his job. However, an athletic director hasn't even been hired yet. That leaves a lot up in the air, but it's something to watch moving forward, especially if things don't turn around.
