Whether it was during the game or after, it didn't seem like Michigan football head coach Kyle Whittingham had a clue what was going on against Indiana.
The Wolverines, despite being unranked, outplayed Indiana (thanks to the defense) and should have beaten the sixth-ranked Hoosiers. Instead, an abysmal effort from the offense, made worse by Jason Beck's terrible play-calling, led to a 13-6 overtime loss.
All that was needed to win was to make a 23-yard field goal, instead of missing it, although not calling a pass play on third-and-goal from the half-yard line would have helped.
Whittingham criticized the play call after the game, as if he's not the head coach. He's done that a few times this season, such as after the fourth-and-one sneak by Bryce Underwood that failed against Iowa.
If Whittingham had just kicked a field goal there, and if he had just instructed his OC to run a QB sneak on Saturday, this team would be 6-1.
I know...if it's and buts were candy and nuts.
Poor coaching is why Michigan football is 4-3
It's hard to look at Michigan's 4-3 record as anything but a coaching failure. Beck took over an offense that returned six offensive linemen who started multiple games a season ago, plus Jordan Marshall. It was a running game that averaged 210 yards per game, without really running the quarterback.
Improving on it seemed like a no-brainer, like it was beyond idiot proof. Then, Beck came along.
Michigan had three drives inside the 10 and got six points. That's a massive failure, as well as a waste of an epic performance from the defense. It did all it could, except for score a touchdown, which turns out, is what it needed to do.
Indiana didn't start a drive in its own territory and score once on Saturday. Yet, Michigan still lost. It's baffling and the only thing Whittingham has to say is that the Wolverines are "pretty good."
Kyle Whittingham after Michigan's 13-6 OT loss to Indiana:

"If that's the number 6 team in the country, then we're a pretty good football team, even though we're sitting here at 4-3."
"If that's the number 6 team in the country, then we're a pretty good football team, even though we're sitting here at 4-3," Whittingham said after the loss.
Whittingham won't change anything because he hasn't mandated changes to a terrible offense since the first game. Looking back, Bryce Underwood wasn't the issue, it was Beck. We knew that. Sitting was probably good for Underwood. His confidence needs to be rebuilt.
The fact that Whittingham thinks Michigan is "pretty good" when the season effectively ended on Saturday, at least any hope of making the College Football Playoff, shows how truly clueless he is. Yet, after watching him allow Jason Beck to do what he has, that's not a surprise.
Nothing is.
