The Michigan football wide receiver room is night and day from where it was a season ago.
Not only does Michigan have Andrew Marsh, one of the best freshmen in the country at the position last season, Kyle Whittingham also landed three others who should have a major impact this season on the wide receiver depth chart: JJ Buchanan, Jaime Ffrench, and Salesi Moa.
Ffrench is a former top-100 recruit who signed with Texas in the 2025 class, but didn't make a major impact with the Longhorns last season, mostly due to a stacked depth chart.
Ability isn't his issue at all. Ffrench was one of the wideouts brought up by Whittingham during the head coach's press conference on Tuesday, which coincided with the start of spring practices. It sounds like four have already emerged at the top of the depth chart, and Whitingham pointed them out.
Kyle Whittingham drops hint about freshman WR playing early
"Andrew Marsh, he’s a tremendous talent," Whittingham said on Tuesday. "That’s very evident. And Jaime Ffrench, that we brought in from Texas, has done a really nice job. Salesi Moa, our true freshman, has really looked sharp in the workouts. J.J. Buchanan, transfer from Utah. Those are probably the top four.
Moa, 6-foot-2, 175 pounds, is listed by Michigan football as a wide receiver. There has been talk of him playing cornerback, too. Yet, the dynamic athlete had 226 catches, 3,757 yards, and 44 touchdowns in high school before signing with Utah. He eventually withdrew from his letter of intent, entered the portal, and transferred to Michigan.
The top-50 overall recruit was expected to make an early impact. He's got abilities that some others on the roster just don't have. And the fact that he's already emerged as a top-four guy this early bodes well for his chances of making an immediate impact for Michigan football this season.
Whittingham didn't come out and say it. But if Moa is already among the top four, it's hard to see him getting knocked out of the top four before the season starts. He's only going to get better.
