John Beilein knows a thing or two about coaching Michigan basketball teams to the Sweet 16.
On Saturday, Beilein was just a spectator. But after the Wolverines' 91-79 win, which came after trailing by 10 points to Texas A&M in the second half, Beilen posted the following on X:
Before 2013 Michigan MBB had not gone to Sweet 16 in 19 years. Now it’s what we do ! Yes, we are a Blue Blood in Men’s Basketball again! Congrats to everyone who is a part of 2025 @umichbball #goblue https://t.co/RFtDXV2tDQ

Incredible Michigan basketball run start with John Beilein
Beilein helped lead the Wolverines to the Sweet 16 in 2013, 2014, 2017, 2018, and 2019. He also guided Michigan basketball to the national title game in 2013 and 2018, as well as two Big Ten regular-season titles and two Big Ten tournament titles.
However, before Beilein got Michigan basketball back on the map, it had been over a decade since the program had won an NCAA tournament game.
After the past two seasons, Michigan basketball had taken a step back. The 2023-24 season set a record for fewest wins. Yet, Beilein helped the Wolverines hire Dusty May and the rest is history.
May has now led the Wolverines to the Sweet 16 and a Big Ten tournament championship in his first season. After a three-game losing streak to end the regular season, Michigan has won five in a row. It's been a remarkable run and reinforces what Beilein said: Michigan is a blue blood.
The Wolverines need to end the national championship drought, but there's no arguing that the Wolverines are a blue blood, especially after they reached the Sweet 16 for the eighth time in the past 12 years.
