There were questions about former Michigan defensive back Josh Metellus after his freshman season with the Wolverines. After three more years of collegiate football and five years in the NFL, those questions have been answered, and then some.
Metellus, who was selected 205th overall in the 2020 NFL Draft by Minnesota, just signed a three-year extension with the Vikings worth up to $42 million, including a guaranteed $25 million.
Yes, that's a lot of money for any player, much less a sixth-year defensive back. However, Metellus has proven his worth over the last five seasons, transforming himself into one of the most dynamic and adaptable defensive backs in the country.
Metellus doesn't stray from the DB role, but he does hop from free safety to strong safety to box safety to nickel in any given game.

Metellus can't just play any role; he is good at all of those roles. Over the last five years, the former Michigan Wolverine has amassed 283 total tackles, 16 pass deflections, and four interceptions, and those stats are just the beginning of his impressive resume.
Josh Metellus NFL career stats (2020-24)
- 283 total tackles (190 solo)
- 16 pass deflections
- 5 forced fumbles
- 2 fumble recoveries
- 4 interceptions
- 2.5 sacks
- 1 blocked kick
Metellus, literally, does it all. From appearances for Minnesota's special teams to becoming a lockdown safety in the defensive secondary, it's no wonder that the Vikings were eager to add a few more years to his contract.
Over the last five seasons, Metellus has missed just four total games, three of those occurring during his first three years in the league. His consistency is yet another highlight of his upside as a player.
Metellus is also well respected by his fellow players in the NFL, as well as by his fellow former Wolverines. He is known as someone who is selfless, both on and off the field, and is always willing to step up as a leader.
The Vikings will kick off their 2025 season with a rivalry game against the Chicago Bears on Monday, Sept. 8, at 8:15 p.m. ET. The game will be broadcast on ABC and ESPN.
