After five years with the Clemson Tigers, redshirt senior Tre Williams announced he was transferring to play for the Michigan Wolverines.
The veteran defensive tackle committed to the Wolverines after earning the No. 10 ranking for all defensive linemen in the transfer portal. Since then, he has had nothing but great things to say about Michigan and the city that the program calls home.
"Why not come to Ann Arbor?" Williams said. "You guys have everything somebody like me could want. Great history of defensive tackles and defensive linemen, great defenses, great tradition, just with the school and the alumni base. There's no reason why I wouldn't have came here."
Williams was talking to a fellow Wolverine, former Michigan offensive tackle Jon Jansen, on the In The Trenches Podcast. The two men discussed everything from what's the most important in their lives to why they committed to Michigan, and more.
Michigan's newest defensive tackle obviously has a wealth of experience, having played five seasons for the Tigers. However, Williams has struggled with staying healthy for the entirety of a season,
"I've had football taken away from me," Williams said. "I've had a bunch of injuries, minor setbacks, and nothing is worse than when the game is away from you. It's very easy to take the game for granted when you have it all the time and you can do it every day. But it's those days when you can't and you're on the sidelines watching. I think those times brought my love for football way up, like even more than it already was when I was a kid—just a deeper appreciation for it."
Over the last five years, Williams played in 44 games for Clemson, where he earned 35 tackles, four sacks, and two pass breakups
"I bring leadership, passion, experience, big game experience, physicality," Williams said. "I try to be, I don't want to say a tone setter, but I kind of want to set the example and be the example."
Williams and the Wolverines are scheduled to kick off their 2025 season against the New Mexico Lobos on Saturday, Aug. 30, at 7:30 p.m. ET. The game will air on NBC and Peacock.
