Even without Dusty May, Michigan is firmly in the mix for game-changing 5-star point guard

Michigan basketball underwent a drastic change as the Wolverines shifted from Dusty May to Mike Boynton as head coach. Only on the recruiting trail, though, you might not notice.

Boynton was and is an exceptional recruiter. In addiiton to his defensive prowess, he has also shown the ability to land elite talent: See Cade Cunningham.

Boynton recruited and developed multiple NBA players in Stillwater with the Oklahoma State Cowboys. If Michigan basketball fans need a reason for optimism, that's one. Boynton kept an elite roster together this offseason and should be able to build elite rosters in the future.

On that note, Michigan baskeball finds itself still in the mix for one of the top prospects in the entire 2027 class, point guard Cayden Daughtry.

The 6-foot, 155-pound point guard out of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, is ranked ninth overall in the 2027 recruiting class, according to the 247 Sports composite rankings. He's also ranked as the No. 1 point guard, and according to his 247 Sports scouting report, he's the most "skilled" player in high school basketball.

"Daughtry is the most skilled player in high school basketball. He has an incredible mastery of the ball at such a young age. He’s rhythmic and creative with his handle, drills deep shots off the dribble, has a great floater game, and advanced lay-up package, all of which is rooted in super soft hands and elite touch. It’s actually in the micro-details where he can differentiate himself though - the various pick-up points for his pull-ups, the way he can manipulate the degree of arc on his shots, vary his stride length through the lane, change direction on a dime without having to slow down, and the cadence of his dribble," Daughtry's scouting report reads.

Michigan is a great fit forf 5-star point guard

One issue is 3-point shooting. He's unproven in that area, which sort of sounds like Elliot Cadeau, the point guard he could eventually replace. Cadeau wasn't proven as a shooter until last season, when he made 12-of-31 in the NCAA Tournament, winning Most Outstanding Player at the Final Four. Cadeau shot 37 percent from 3-point range last season.

That has to be a selling point for Michigan to Daughtry, a player Michigan is still "very much in the mix for," according to Brice Marich of The Michigan Insider.

Marich also reported that Boynton and Kyle Church, who just agreed to stay on as an assistant, have been "stepping up" their efforts to land the five-star point guard, who sounds like the ideal candidate to take over in the future for Cadeau.
