Rivalry games are part of what makes college football great and despite all the things that have changed the sport over the years, the rivalry between Michigan and Michigan State endures.

For Michigan, the Spartans are the No. 2 rival. That's just the way it is. Ohio State is Michigan's chief rival on the gridiron, just like MSU is No. 1 on the basketball court, followed by the Buckeyes.

Losing to Michigan State is just about as miserable as losing to Ohio State, and as if Michigan football fans haven't forgotten, there have been some costly defeats in East Lansing over the years.

Nothing should be taken for granted. That was the point Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore was making when he said, "Records do not matter."

Wolverines can't overlook MSU, even as a double-digit favorite

Michigan might be 5-1, while Michigan State is 3-3. It doesn't matter. The Spartans will be playing to save their season, just like head coach Jonathan Smith is coaching to save his job.

Aidan Chiles and Nick Marsh are just good enough to make it scary. Michigan is also young and prone to mistakes, which could lead to an outcome that's closer than expected.

Michigan football is a 14-point favorite, according to Vegas Oddsmakers. Yet, Michigan is 1-2 against the spread on the road this season, with Nebraska being their only cover.

Regardless of the spread, Michigan better be ready for a dogfight. Nothing will be conceded. It will be one of the two hardest-hitting games of the season and even though the Wolverines are a double-digit favorite, the Spartans are a team to fear.

Not because of what we have seen the past few weeks, but because of what history has taught us about rivalry games and what can happen in them.

Especially between Michigan and Michigan State.
