The Michigan football program notched a huge win last Saturday over Washington. But that win won't mean anything if the Wolverines can't stack success against Michigan State this week.
Outside of "The Game", no game on the schedule means more than Michigan State. It's for the state championship as Jim Harbaugh used to say.
And, truth be told, Michigan football is never at its lowest than when it's losing games to the Spartans on a regular basis. Michigan has currently won three in a row, but outside of the 49-0 thrashing two years ago, the wins haven't been easy to come by.
Michigan football can't overlook Sparty
I wouldn't expect anything different on Saturday, as Michigan football heads to East Lansing for what is surely to be the Spartans' Super Bowl once again.
Jonathan Smith is on the hot heat. One thing that could save his job is beating Michigan this Saturday. Strange things happen when Michigan goes to East Lansing. The Wolverines also haven't been great on the road, although they did beat Nebraska.
Either way, Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore isn't taking anything for granted this week. In his Monday press conference, one of the things he said about Michigan State is, "The records do not matter," via Anthony Broome of The Wolverine. Moore also said the Wolverines were attacking the week with "urgency."
Moore is right on that. Records don't matter. The only record that matters is going 1-0 this week. The Spartans have struggled but had a lead on Indiana last week, albeit short lived. They also have a talented quarterback in Aidan Chiles and a game-breaking wide receiver in Nick Marsh.
Nothing is a guarantee is this rivalry, which is why it was good to hear Moore say what he said.
