Michigan basketball won for the first time in East Lansing in eight years on Friday night, and before the game, Dusty May knew it would happen.

At least that's what he told the Michigan basketball team before its win in a top-10 showdown with the Spartans.

Electric speech by Dusty May predicts Michigan basketball victory

“This team’s never played here. This team is 0-0. In 40 minutes of game clock, we’ll be 1-0 when we leave here," May said during his pre-game speech.

Winning at the Breslin Center isn't easy. May's team was defeated easily there in 2025. So it was a huge task, but one that great Michigan teams are generally able to achieve.

The last Michigan basketball team to win in East Lansing was the 2017-18 Michigan basketball team that advanced to the national championship game. So that's a great sign moving forward. Michigan also snapped a five-game losing streak for the Spartans overall, that dated back to before Dusty May,

In his short Michigan basketball career, May has already won a Big Ten tournament title, advanced to the Sweet 16, is unbeaten against Ohio State, and has won at the Breslin Center.

May has the Wolverines ranked No. 1 in the Kenpom rankings. What should make Michigan basketball fans feel even better about that is that U-M has the best defense in the country.

That's something you can hang your hat on in November. Illinois is tied with Michigan for first in the Big Ten, after a win at Nebraska on Sunday.

So the Wolverines haven't achieved anything yet, but after a massive win, Michigan is in a great position to hang a banner this season, maybe more than one.
