One of the best moves made in the college basketball transfer portal this offseason was when Michigan basketball signed Tennessee transfer J.P. Estrella.

Estrella was ranked as a top-25 transfer by multiple sites. However, his addition was perfect for the Wolverines because of what he brings to the table.

Not only is Estrella 6-foot-11, but he's a talented low-post scorer, something Michigan needed with Aday Mara and Morez Johnson both expected to be first-round picks. Estrella is also an elite offensive rebounder and a better defender than people give him credit for.

Dusty May and Michigan basketball are certainly fans. The Wolverines played Estrella in the Elite 8. He was on the Vols roster, and U-M liked what it saw. May said the evaluation went beyond that, going back to high school film study, which May says could reveal some untapped potential.

"We loved his motor and physicality," May told Andy Katz. "Went back and looked at high school film in AAU ball when he shot the ball well from the perimeter. He was very adept as a dribble-handoff guy, so we think that there are some things with our offense that we really value."

May also said that Estrella can add the Will Tschetter factor, as far as being a guy that players on the team can connect with.

Estrella has more upside than Michigan basketball fans realize

Estrella can bring two things to the table immediately that Michigan needed: low-post scoring and rebounding. He's not Morez Johnson on defense, but Estrella played in a strong defensive system in Tennessee and should be solid on that end, too.

However, if Estrella can develop a reliable 3-point shot, that would be an X-factor. There should be plenty of chances with the ball-screen game Michigan runs, if he can pick-and-pop. That's not really something the Wolverines had in their arsenal last season outside of Tschetter.

Johnson shot 34 percent from deep but didn't take a high volume of attempts. Estrella might be sneaky-good in that role, which is just one reason why the Tennessee transfer has upside, just like the other bigs who have transferred to Michigan the past two seasons.
