Dusty May may have just found his Elliot Cadeau successor with 5-star PG

With Cadeau entering his final season with the Wolverines, Dusty May needs a new floor general.

Michigan is getting ready to do something few programs have done before: win back-to-back National Championships on the hardwood. After winning it all with a starting five completely made up of transfers, head coach Dusty May has built his roster for next season, partially through the transfer portal, but also with a stellar 2026 recruiting class.

It will remain to be seen what this 2026 class brings to the court this next season, but May is already preparing for his 2027 class. With offers out, 2027 prospects will begin to set official visits, and Michigan is after one of the top point guards in the class.

Five-star point guard Cayden Daughtry has received a lot of interest, especially from Michigan, which will be looking for an Elliot Cadeau successor after this season. Cadeau is returning to Ann Arbor for one more season before heading to the NBA, so a contingency plan needs to be in place for his departure.

Daughtry is the No. 16-rated player in the Class of 2027, and the No. 4 point guard in the class according to 247Sports Composite rankings. Michigan is not the only team after his commitment by a long shot, battling a few familiar faces.

Michigan could also use the support in the front court with incoming freshman Brandon McCoy most likely being a one-and-done player to the NBA next season, along with sophomore Trey McKinney. McKinney made a large impact for the Wolverines in the postseason and in the National Championship game with Yaxel Lendeborg's knee injury.

5-star point guard Cayden Daughtry is already planning an official visit to Ann Arbor

In an interview while he was at the U17 USA Basketball Tryouts, Daughtry talked about what schools he is interested in, Michigan being one, but also the official visits he plans to take as of right now. Daughtry already has a visit to Iowa on the books, but more are soon to come.

Iowa isn't the only school May will have to compete with, although head coach Ben McCollum has done a fantastic job building that program back up in just one season so far. May will also be up against Miami, another up-and-coming program with young head coach Jai Lucas, and Michigan's National Championship opponent, UConn, as well.

Daughtry named those three schools specifically, as well as Michigan, as schools he is already planning to have official visits to. There were a few other schools he didn't choose to name, that only Daughtry knows he wants to see.

If Michigan can land Daughtry, it would be the perfect timing for Cadeau's departure, and May isn't afraid to play a freshman, especially one with the talent of Daughtry. May wouldn't have to worry about hitting the portal so hard, especially with the talent he also has coming in with the 2026 class, who by 2027 will have more experience on the court.

Now, all Michigan can do is wait until Daughtry sets his official visit with the Wolverines and hope that they can make him feel like the priority target that he is.
