On Friday, a judge ruled that 2022 college-bound athletes were granted another year of eligibility. The ruling has already reopened the portal to some notable names that will take advantage of a fifth-year opportunity. Fortunately, there is one player from Michigan's National Championship rotation who can apply for the newly-minted decision.
After hiring his new assistant coaches, Mike Boynton can turn his attention to filling the lone roster spot in Michigan's lineup. That's where the familiar face of Roddy Gayle Jr. comes into the equation. He can return to Michigan and bolster Michigan's chances at a repeat in Detroit next April.
Once the news came out, Gayle took to social media to tease a possible return to Ann Arbor. He posted an image on Instagram that got the internet talking about a comeback. First off, Gayle has to get a temporary injunction from the NCAA to be eligible, then he can decide whether he wants to play at Michigan or somewhere else next season.

Is Michigan a possiblity for Roddy Gayle in the 2026-27 season?
That somewhere else could be the NBA. He played well for the Pistons as an undrafted free agent who inked a summer league deal and that could help him with someone investing in him to develop in the G-League. Playing abroad in Europe is another option for him if he wishes to leave the states, where he could start and make more money than whatever Michigan offers him in NIL incentives. In defense of him staying at Michigan, he can play the role that LJ Cason would have served, had he not been injured, or transferred out.
Monday, August 3rd, is when the portal officially reopens, and Gayle can make his intentions known to Michigan basketball or choose another path on his basketball journey.
If Gayle doesn't choose Michigan, then Boynton will have some intriguing stars available to take Gayle's place. Elite scorers like Moe Odum, Mark Mitchell, and AJ Storr have already entered the domain and will be in high demand. However, they will expect a much more lofty package in NIL than what Gayle dictates.
