Michigan basketball head coach Mike Boynton has finalized his coaching staff, making another dynamic hire, which was reported by The Michigan Insider on Friday, as Dylan Murphy, the former head coach of Orlando's G-League franchise, will join Boynton's staff as an assistant coach.

Murphy is the second head coach that Boynton has hired as an assistant coach this offseason. Mike Martin of Brown was the first. He's a coach known for his work on both ends of the floor. Some have suggested that he will be the "offensive coordinator" sort of like Boynton was essentially the defensive coordinator for Dusty May.

Murphy, though, has a strong resume. Before taking over as the head coach for the Osceola Magic, he spent five seasons with the Orlando Magic. Murphy spent two seasons as basketball operations analyst, before being promoted to an assistant coach.

Over the past two seasons, Murphy has been successful as a head coach for the Magic's G-League franchise. He's particularly known for his offensive prowess, which is just one more reason that Michigan basketball fans should love this addition to the staff.

"Murphy has led the Orlando Magic affiliate to first-place conference finishes in his three seasons. He's known for his offensive prowess, and his accolades include NBA G League Coach of the Month honors in March 2025," The Michigan Insider reported.

Dusty May, who was hired by the Dallas Mavericks to be their head coach in June, was all-in on the analytics side of things. That was a big part of what the Wolverines were doing, and Murphy brings that same level of focus after doing it at the NBA level. He has also been highly successful as a head coach, who is known for his offensive acumen.

Boynton, who has seven years of head coaching experience, has built an impressive coaching staff that includes Martin, as well as holdovers Kyle Church, KT Harrell, and Akeem Miskdeen, as well as strength coach Matt Aldred.

The new Michigan basketball head coach is under immense pressure. Not only is he replacing one of the best coaches in college basketball, but he's taking over the defending national champions. Boynton can earn a second season with 24 wins this year, along with achieving other metrics.

It felt like the season might be a lost cause soon after May's departure was reported. Yet, things have gone as well as expected since then, even better actually. Boynton retained 13 of the 14 players on the roster when May left, and kept most of the staff together, in addition to hiring a college head coach and a G-league head coach.

May's leaving for the NBA was rough. Yet, Boynton has handled the transition better than anyone could have expected. So far, he has passed every test with flying colors.
