Bryce Underwood had moments where he looked like a true freshman against the Texas Longhorns in the Citrus Bowl, in a 41-27 defeat for Michigan.
However, there were also moments that reminded you why Underwood is talked about as a future No. 1 overall pick. Arch Manning had the better day overall, doing a ton of damage with his arm and his legs, but Underwood had one of his better performances, outside of three interceptions, with three total touchdowns and 266 total yards.
All three interceptions hurt, but the first two were costly. One came near the end zone. Another came as the Wolverines were driving in the fourth quarter to try to retake the lead.
Important step for Michigan comes next
It felt like Michigan had a chance to win. Then, Underwood threw two interceptions that sealed the Wolverines' fate. The kid had three touchdowns and three interceptions. It was a freshman performance, but one that Underwood needed much earlier this season.
Too often, Underwood was treated too conservatively. Michigan only threw five passes in the first half against Ohio State. You could see why on Wednesday. The mistakes are going to happen, but if Underwood isn't allowed to make them, how will he learn?
As ugly as it was at times, there were great moments, too. That's quarterback development. It's all part of the process, and at least the Wolverines let it all hang out.
Winning or losing the Citrus Bowl didn't really matter. It would have been fun. A 10-win season, and a top-25 win would have been a good way to end a frustrating season.
Yet, the most important things, at least for the future of Michigan football will happen after this game, and that future, despite the interceptions, is still very much about Bryce Underwood.
