1. The Prototype of the Modern Quarterback
Underwood's skill set makes him the perfect fit for the new landscape of college football. At 6-foot-3, 210 lbs., he has the size to withstand the agonizing defenses of the Big Ten, while possessing the mobility to extend plays and make things happen outside the pocket. Unlike traditional quarterbacks of the past, who were often defined by pocket presence and efficiency, Underwood is a dynamic playmaker who can win games for Michigan football with both his arm and legs.
His deep ball is effortless, his release is quick, and his ability to read defenses is advanced for his age. But what sets him apart is his composure; he never looks rattled, no matter the situation. That quality alone makes him a quarterback who can thrive in the biggest moments, something that resembles JJ McCarthy all too well.
2. Expanding Michigan's Offensive Ceiling
Since taking over as head coach, the passing game has often struggled under Sherrone Moore. While Michigan football has historically leaned on a dominant run game, Underwood's arrival signals a shift toward a more explosive passing attack, something that we didn't see even with McCarthy.
Expect to see more RPOs, designed quarterback runs, and a vertical passing game. With Underwood under center, Michigan's offense won't just be efficient, it will be dangerous. But just how high is the ceiling for this team?
I think we could see something close to 2005 USC. There will be generational players on this team the next few years, not limited to Underwood, but Jordan Marshall and Andrew Babalola as well.
3. A Recruiting Magnet
We've already seen it. The best recruits in the nation want to play with the best recruits in the nation. Ty Haywood is expected to commit to Michigan football the Wolverines may be able to flip Chris Henry Jr. from Ohio State. Elite receivers and offensive playmakers want to play with an elite quarterback. I can't echo that enough.
I believe that Underwood has the potential to headline a 2019 LSU team in the near future. Michigan will be able to pull 5-star WRs like there's no tomorrow and every top OL will want to protect the best Quarterback in the country. Not to mention the tradition there already from the Joe Moore award and TEs like Colston Loveland.
4. The Future is Now
Bryce Underwood represents more than just the next great Michigan quarterback, he represents a new era. With his talent, leadership, and ability to transform an offense, he has all the tools to not only succeed but to revolutionize Michigan football.
The stage is set, and Ann Arbor is waiting.
