One of Kyle Whittingham's former players, and a former NFL star, Eric Weddle, made some eye-opening comments about Michigan football quarterback Bryce Underwood recently, which caught fire on social media.

Weddle, who was on campus during Michigan football spring ball, along with his son, a 2028 recruit on a visit to the Wolverines, got a chance to watch practice and wasn't impressed with Underwood.

“Mark My Words…Don’t be surprised if the backups are playing early. I don’t think Bryce Underwood can throw or play quarterback," Weddle said via the Zero to Sixty Podcast.

Underwood had some ups and downs last season in his first year as a starter for Michigan football. He had barely turned 18 when the season started, and the expectations were a little overboard, which Bryce was partially responsible for. He made some bold comments that maybe he shouldn't have made.

Still, Underwood was better last season than people give him credit for. He also didn't take kindly to Weddle's comments, as he appeared to respond in a couple of different social media posts over the weekend.

First, Underwood posted a laughing emoji, with the caption stay sleeping. The message is clear that Underwood is telling his doubters to keep sleeping on him. That's the kind of response that Michigan football fans should like. It's not over the top, but it also exudes confidence.

Underwood was plenty confident ahead of his freshman season. He didn't always walk the walk after talking the talk, but Weddle's comments saying the No. 1 quarterback in the 2025 class can't even throw come off as absurd. You can't imagine Kyle Whittingham is very pleased either, especially after he has talked repeatedly about the improved development of Underwood.

Those inside Schembechler Hall are confident in his ability. Some have said Underwood's development reminds them of J.J. McCarthy, according to a recent report.

Underwood has a lot to prove. But now, if he needed it, he has even more motivation to prove the doubters wrong, something he seems determined to do. He also posted a picture of himself beinggiven the Joker mask. The reference is that Biff Poggi called Underwood "Batman" after a Wolverines win last season, and Bryce is saying that he's decided to become the Joker.

Anyone familiar with QB development knows that it's not a linear process. It's a process and with Whittingham and Jason Beck in charge of that process, it will be much more smoothly.

Fans can also expect Underwood to take a big step forward, despite what the critics have to say.
