The Michigan football season is just five games old, and already, some have thrown in the towel.

After consecutive losses to Iowa and Minnesota, Michigan is going to have to battle to take a bowl game, let alone have a chance to play any meaningful games this season. Michigan would have to win out. The best it can do is reach a bowl and try to beat its rivals.

That's not much to look forward to with seven games left. Yet, Monday was a reminder why Michigan fans have something else to look forward to, Michigan basketball.

Michigan basketball is something to look forward to

The Wolverines are the defending national champions. There have been some major losses in the offseason headlined by head coach Dusty May. He's coaching the Mavericks now. Mike Boynton Jr. has taken over as the Wolverines head coach on a two-year deal.

The former Oklahoma State head coach was able to keep the roster together. LJ Cason left. Everyone else stayed. He also got Roddy Gayle back after five-star Brandon McCoy suffered a season-ending injury.

McCoy was going to make a major impact. Gayle can at least step in for what he was going to do on the defensive end. He can be a secondary playmaker, too, but that injury was a blow.

Still, the Wolverines were picked third in the Preseason All-Big Ten poll. Two Michigan basketball players, Elliot Cadeau and Trey McKenney were named First-Team All-Big Ten. Don't be shocked if McKenney is the Big Ten Player of the Year. Illinois was picked to win the Big Ten. Michigan State was picked to finish second.

The frontcourt needs to play well if the Wolverines are going to have a chance to reach the Final Four. Moustapha Thiam, JP Estrella, and Jalen Reed will have critical roles to play. There is enough talent for the Wolverines to win the Big Ten championship for the second year in a row. Quinn Costello is a near five-star freshman and a dynamic 3-point shooter, so there are other pieces available.

So even though the football season has been downright depressing, Michigan fans can be excited about the basketball team.
