Transfer QB Billy Edwards would be a great fit for Michigan football
Michigan football has made it clear that it's going to take a quarterback from the transfer portal. There have been a few names thrown out there. Miller Moss has been a name connected to the Wolverines but other schools have been pushing for him.
One name that might intrigue Michigan football is former Maryland starter Billy Edwards. Edwards was the starting quarterback for Maryland last season and there has been some buzz about him and Michigan. Edwards entered the portal Thursday.
One insider, Josh Henschke of Rivals, posted on X "Billy Edwards has hit the portal, now what?"
That makes you think Edwards is a name that's been mentioned behind the scenes. In some ways, it would make a lot of sense. The 6-foot-3 quarterback has one season of eligibility. He threw 15 touchdown passes for Maryland in 2024 yet he also had nine interceptions. Edwards completed 65 percent of his passes and ran for five touchdowns. That's in addition to throwing for 2,881 (269 per game).
As a freshman, Edwards went 5-of-9 off the bench for 62 yards and a touchdown in 2022 against Michigan football in Ann Arbor. He also rushed for 16 yards. During his college career, Edwards has been an effective runner.
He's had nine games with at least 24 yards rushing and remember, sacks count against the rushing total of a quarterback. He's got 144 attempts for his career for 375 yards and 13 touchdowns.
Edwards was a full-time starter for the first time last season. It wasn't known if he would enter the portal. He did and Michigan would be foolish not to make a run at him. He's got proven production in the Big Ten, can be accurate, and isn't a complete statue.
The question is whether he would be willing to join a QB room with 5-star quarterback Bryce Underwood. Underwood will certainly play this season (think J.J. McCarthy) even if he doesn't win the starting job.
But if Edwards is willing, he's exactly what Michigan is after in a stop-gap starting QB.
