Jeff Brohm isn't going to be the next Michigan football head coach, that seems clear based on Wednesday.
Pete Thamel reported an update on the Michigan coaching search on Wednesday, naming Kyle Whittingham, Eli Drinkwitz, and Jedd Fisch as potential candidates. Brohm's name wasn't mentioned and it doesn't appear that he will get an offer, just like Kenny Dillingham didn't.
We have discussed Fisch before. It seemed like he was taken off the board, but maybe Michigan football will circle back if needed.
Drinkwitz doesn't feel like a good fit. Whittingham is a great coach, but there are questions about his age, as well as his recruiting prowess.
There could be another candidate in the mix, though, according to Football Scoop, which is Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken.
How would Todd Monken fit at Michigan?
Monken has worked in the college and the NFL mostly as an offensive coordinator. Monken has been working in that role for the Ravens for the past three seasons after being the offensive coordinator for Georgia in their back-to-back national championship seasons.
Monken has been a college football head coach. He was at Southern Miss for three seasons, turning a winless program into a conference champion in just three seasons, before he was hired away by the Bucs to be their offensive coordinator. He was C-USA Coach of the Year in 2015.
Monken would be a great fit for Bryce Underwood. He would also fit with Michigan and the way it runs the ball. He hasn't been a head coach in college football, or any kind for more than a decade.
But there is a lot to be excited about, particularly the playcalling. He could certainly put together a quality staff, so this isn't the worst idea. It might even be interesting enough to keep Bryce Underwood around.
