With the shocking news of Sherrone Moore's dismissal from the Michigan Wolverines, the Wolverines find themselves in desperate need of a new head coach. With the NIL, transfer portal, and college football playoff, Michigan football needs to find the right person for this job. Immediately. With James Franklin and Lane Kiffin already in new places, Michigan's choices are few and far between.
Here are five potential candidates that could land in Ann Arbor.
Nick Saban
Don't say retirement lasts forever. Take one look at Phillip Rivers playing for the Indianapolis Colts. Retirement is a fluid term. Michigan should at least pick up the phone and see if Nick Saban will do it. His resume speaks for itself. The ESPN job is nice and cushy but once a coach, always a coach. Michigan should at least make the call.
Jesse Minter
Jesse Minter. He was once the defensive coordinator with Harbaugh at Michigan, and the defense was pretty much unstoppable. He's currently with Harbaugh in Los Angeles, but one thing is for certain: he's a good coach and Harbaugh would advocate for him. Which may or may not be a good thing, but still.
Mike Tomlin
Listen, Mike Tomlin has been with the Pittsburgh Steelers so long that people don't even remember when he wasn't. There has been so much talk of the fanbase being unhappy and that it may be time to part ways mutually. Mike Tomlin is a great leader of men. Everyone says it. It's risky because of the current state of college football, but maybe it's worth a shot.
Andrew Luck
Andrew Luck popped back up on our radars like a welcoming old friend. Even though he is a consultant for the Stanford Cardinals, nothing really beats being a head coach. He clearly has the exuberance and interest in football. He knows what it's like in the Midwest, and he definitely knows what it's like to have expectations.
Urban Meyer
This one may rock the Michigan football fanbase, but someone needs to dial Urban Meyer. He's been sitting on the FOX desk for quite some time now, yet if anyone knows what it's like to be in the Big Ten, it's Meyer. Yes, loyalty to Ohio State could be a thing here, but ultimately, there is not much loyalty going on in college football anymore. Urban Meyer may still have another run in him, like Nick Saban. Michigan should throw him whatever he wants. If anything, just to make that game in late November, much watch television.
One last notable mention would be Cignetti from Indiana, but Indiana just paid him a lot of money...it would be up to Michigan to match that.
Michigan has to get this right. No room for error.
