Maybe commitments don't mean as much as they used to. Or maybe they are harder to hold on to. Either way, Michigan football learned that lesson again on Tuesday.

Four-star safety Darrell Mattison, who just committed to the Wolverines last month, out of Chicago, has reopened his recruitment, decommitting on Tuesday. He's ranked No. 405 overall in the 2027 recruiting class, according to the 247 Sports composite rankings.

Mattison was viewed as the first high school recruiting commitment for Michigan football head coach Kyle Whittingham. The Wolverines added some late 2026 recruits, but Mattison was the first blue-chip commitment.

Now, that commitment is off the table but that's not without a reason.

SEC team trending to land former Michigan football commitment

Mattison recently visited Ole Miss. The Rebels started trending with expert projections for the flip to happen on Sunday, so the report about Mattison's decommitment wasn't shocking.

Things aren't all bad for Michigan football on the recruiting trail. A five-star cornerback was on campus this past weekend and was "in awe" during his visit. That sounds promising moving forward, but another Michigan commitment visited UNLV last weekend.

Maxwell Miles, a three-star recruit committed to the Wolverines visited UNLV this weekend. He's also been offered by UTEP and Cal recently, which is hard to understand.

Miles had six interceptions last season. He's a ball-hawk. His brother also plays for UNLV, which explains the visit. Yet, with some of these other programs offering a Michigan commitment, it feels like maybe the door is open for this recruitment to be re-opened, too.
