4-star LB Ryan Peterson locks in Michigan game-day visit for huge defensive matchup

As the 2026 season gets closer with each day, fans can begin to hear the faint sounds of the marching band playing their favorite college fight song, helmets clashing on the field, and the cheers after a big touchdown. Football is so close we can almost taste it.

While fans are excited to see their favorite teams hit the field again, prospective recruits are excited to see their top schools in action. For Michigan, head coach Kyle Whittingham is quickly securing game-day visits from some of his top 2028 prospects. Michigan certainly has plenty of big games on the schedule to wow recruits with, the first being the Oklahoma Sooners in the second game of the season.

Four-star linebacker Ryan Peterson has announced he will be in Ann Arbor when the Wolverines take on the Sooners, and he is bound to see two great defenses go at it.

While the pomp and circumstance of a high-scoring game is fun to watch, there is truly nothing better than a good ole-fashioned defensive battle in the trenches. When it comes to Michigan and Oklahoma this season, the offenses might have a tough time getting into the end zone.

If there is one thing that has been constant for Michigan in its up-and-down seasons over the last few years, it is the defense. You can bet the Wolverines are going to put one of the most physical defenses on the field, and now with defensive coordinator Jay Hill leading the way, opposing offenses better watch out.

Oklahoma won't be an easy opponent for the Wolverines, but defensively, Michigan should have the upper hand with the experience Hill will have on the field. As a linebacker prospect, this is a great matchup for Peterson to see, even with the linebacker room being the weakest link of this defense.

Hill will field more of an inexperienced linebacker group, but when the secondary and defensive line are as good as they are, the pressure comes off these linebackers in the second phase. Peterson would be able to see exactly how he could be acclimated into the defense by seeing these new guys doing it in the second game of the season.

As the No. 124 player in the country and No. 7 linebacker in the Class of 2028, Peterson is one of Whittigham's top targets right now. It is reported that linebackers coach Alex Whittingham, who has been a recruiting machine for Michigan since joining the staff, made a strong impression on Peterson, and now his group could close the deal with a quality performance against John Mateer and the Sooners.
