3 things to watch for Michigan football vs. Illinois
The Michigan football season hasn't gone as expected. Some bumps and bruises were expected. Even a 4-2 record at the midway point wouldn't have been a huge shock before the season with all of the coaching and roster turnover.
But it's the way that Michigan football has looked that's been shocking. The defense ranks outside the top 50 in scoring (points allowed). The offense is a shell of itself and the offensive line, at least so far, has been a major disappointment.
Defensive coordinator Wink Martindale has had a tough time adjusting to college football and at the halfway point of the season, this doesnt look like a playoff team.
However, 24th-ranked Michigan plays the first of four games against ranked teams in the final six on Saturday at No. 22 Illinois, and here are three things to watch.
Can Jack Tuttle be the quarterback?
Jack Tuttle had a few good series against Washington, but one of those drives was ended on a long run from Donovan Edwards.
It's true that Tuttle being able to throw the ball, as in actually throwing it, which wasn't happening under Alex Orji, meant the defense had to play a little differently. The Wolverines did score 17 unanswered points at one point and if Tuttle can protect the ball, he'll be the best option going forward.
It remains to be seen if he can beat top-25 teams but Saturday against Illinois will be a great first test.
