When it comes to Michigan football fans, there are a few head coaches the fanbase isn't fond of. However, when it comes to current coaches, who tops the list?
The head coach of Ohio State will always be hated by Michigan football fans and vice versa. The advanced scouting investigation has ramped that up ten fold.
Ohio State fans are using the whole thing as an excuse to mitigate the fact that the Wolverines have won four straight games over the Buckeyes. Many Michigan people believe Ohio State played in a role in the investigation playing out the way it did.
We probably will never know. But here are three head coaches that Michigan football fans love to hate.
James Franklin, Penn State
James Franklin is just annoying. He's gotten some big wins over Michigan, but the Wolverines have had the upper hand, especially in the past decade.
Franklin annoys Michigan fans for other reasons. Mostly he's mocked for his incompetence. But he was one of the biggest crybabies during the sign-gate saga. He's also negatively recruited against Michigan using the NCAA investigation.
Franklin just rubs Michigan fans the wrong way and outside of Ryan Day, there's not a current head U-M fans love seeing the Wolverines beat more.
Matt Rhule, Nebraska
Jonathan Smith hasn't done enough to be relevant for Michigan fans to hate. He's a good coach, but just being the Michigan State head coach is not enough to be on this list.
Matt Rhule, on the other hand, has badmouthed Michigan for "scouting" Nebraska related to the alleged advanced scouting of Connor Stallions. He even blamed a player's injury on it, which frankly is ridiculous.
Nebraska lost to Michigan 42-7 two years ago, in 2023. The Wolverines dominated the game, yet Nebraska fans, with Rhule's lead, have pointed to Stallions as an explanation.
Sherrone Moore won't be the on the sidelines, but Michigan fans would love to see the Wolverines beat the Huskers and Rhule in the Big Ten opener.
Ryan Day
The Ohio State head coach does have a win over Michigan, but after saying he was going to "hang 100" on the Wolverines, he's drawn the ire of the Michigan fanbase.
He's also become the butt of jokes after his team lost four consecutive games to Michigan after he made those comments. The Buckeyes did win the natty last season. Yet, that championship would have been much sweeter without the 13-10 loss to unranked Michigan.
Some Michigan fans will jokingly say they like Ryan Day as the head coach, because of Michigan's success. Ohio State fans used to say the same thing about Jim Harbaugh. U-M fans also said it about John Cooper.
We'll see if Day turns that around. Michigan's win streak can't continue forever, but fans may never enjoy the Wolverines beating a head coach more than the current Ohio State head man.
