3 biggest offseason concerns Dusty May is still facing

Michigan basketball has made some solid moves this offseason but there are some lingering concerns for Dusty May.

It might be premature to say that the Michigan basketball roster is done being built for the 2026-27 season, but the Wolverines are very close.

Dusty May talked about how he felt good about his roster at his latest press conference. Morez Johnson could still return to school, however, it seems likely that he's played his last game as a Wolverine.

That's why May told Fox Sports in a recent interview he expects all five bigs Michigan has landed in the past two seasons from the portal to be playing in the NBA (Danny Wolf, Vlad Goldin, Yaxel, Aday Mara, and Morez Johnson).

Despite three first-round picks leaving the roster, and some key veterans such as Will Tschetter and Roddy Gayle, the Wolverines feel like they have a top-10 roster.

Here are three questions that still linger heading into the offseason.

Is there enough point guard depth?

Elliot Cadeau was the Most Outstanding Player of the Final Four. He was incredible throughout the postseason. He will have a great chance to be All-Big Ten next season.

Trey McKenney can certainly handle the extra minutes each night. Brandon McCoy could pitch in, too. However, all three are projected to start.

If there happened to be an injury, the lack of a true backup point guard, could throw a real wrench into the rotation. My giuess is that McKenney would be the point guard, but that means that the Wolverines would need another guard to step into significant minutes.

Can breakout candidates reach their potential?

The biggest key to Michigan's success next season comes down to internal development. How much better can Dusty May help these players become over the next six months?

Trey McKenney has Big Ten Player of the Year potential. He just scratched the surface last season, but made 39 percent of his 3-point shots, has a deadly mid-range game, and was a stellar on-ball defender.

The dude does it all and it's going to be exciting to see the jump he makes next season. Moustapha Thiam has first-round pick potential just like the three bigs who just left for the NBA. If he reaches his ceiling, along with McKenney, and others like J.P. Estrella and Brandon McCoy, this team could be nearly as talented as the one that just won the national championship.

Are the freshman ready to play?

Last season, May had to get four transfers to gel and he did that to perfection. One of the biggest keys in terms of getting back to the Final Four or having a shot to repeat will be the ability of May's second-ranked recruiting class to make an instant impact.

McKenney was stellar as a freshman. He hit essentially the most important shot in the national title game. L.J. Cason played better than expected as a freshman, too.

McCoy is expected to be in the starting lineup unless another big-time portal addition is made. Quinn Costello and Joseph Hartman should be expected to contribute, too. Costello was a McDonald's All-American, and is one of the best 3-point shooters in this class at 6-foot-10.

If McCoy and Costello could be on the same level of McKennney as a freshmen, the Wolverines will have a much higher ceiling next season. A repeat might even be possible.
