Michigan Football: 3 overreactions from win over Iowa
By Nick Popio
3. Michigan’s offensive line didn’t miss Zak Zinter
This is an extreme overreaction. Zinter is the heart and soul of not just the offensive line, but the entire team. He is a Michigan football legend and there is no arguing that statement. Karsen Barnhart and Trente Jones filled in quite admirably, but you just can’t replace such an experienced talent like Zinter with one guy.
The rushing aspect of the offense took a hit in his absence. J.J. McCarthy was sacked four times when he dropped back to pass. Drake Nugent got injured and as coach Harbaugh said in his presser he played on one leg. After going practically all season without any major injuries, time is catching up to Michigan’s good fortunes.
Alabama’s defensive line will bring an NFL-caliber test to the offensive line in the Rose Bowl. They have a first-rounder off the edge in Dallas Turner that Michigan football will have to account for. As we’ve seen over the years, the trenches are where Nick Saban’s teams can wear you down and break your will.
Alabama is not an ideal matchup for Michigan, but the Tide are not built like they have been in the past. Michigan football is more in the mold of past Bama championship teams.
