5 things to watch for Michigan football vs. Maryland
Can the pass protection hold up?
J.J. McCarthy only attempted eight passes last week and some have used that as a sign that Michigan football doesn’t trust its quarterback.
Nothing could be further from the truth. If the Wolverines could trade McCarthy for any quarterback in college football — they wouldn’t. He’s elite and not just as a playmaker.
McCarthy is as good at protecting the ball as any quarterback in the country. He has an NFL arm and can make things happen with his legs too.
Last week, Penn State was hellbent on bringing pressure. Their defensive line is good and their secondary is too.
Surely, Moore felt confident in his defense and then by pounding the rock, he reduced the chance of an impact play like a strip sack or interception that could have turned the tide.
Michigan needed a par on 18 to win. It hit 3-iron, 7-iron, 7-iron, and still wound up with a birdie. Michigan has a driver in the bag (McCarthy) and it will use him this week.
The Wolverines are ranked second in the Big Ten in sacks allowed. Maryland is fourth in sacks, but I don’t see the Terps getting the same kind of pressure as Penn State.
However, the pass protection has been an issue and this will be a good test because it has to get better before the Ohio State game.
