2. The Michigan Defense is Going to Shut Down the PSU Offense

Michigan football will likely be the best defense Penn State has played all year. Even if you think OSU has a better defense, Michigan certainly isn’t far behind at all. Penn State has been inconsistent on offense all year. Even in games that end up in blowout wins, it usually takes a few quarters for the Nittany Lion offense to get going. Quarterback Drew Allar has a lot of talent, but has struggled with consistency. We saw this really hurt them in the OSU game.

Michigan is one of the best teams in the country at disguising coverages and blitzes. For a first-year starter, this is a nightmare matchup. Additionally, the running game for Penn State also hasn’t been able to get going this year. There was a ton of hype around running backs Nicholas Singleton and Kaytron Allen coming into this year. So far, they’ve looked pedestrian, neither averaging more than 65 yards per game. And against Michigan’s dominant interior D-line, I don’t see this being the week that changes.

The critique of Michigan not playing any good offenses is true. That doesn’t mean that this defense isn’t elite, however. Penn State will have stretches of moving the ball in this game. They’ll have some big plays. They won’t be able to consistently beat this Michigan defense for four quarters, however.
