Michigan football vs. Michigan State: Prediction, Odds, Spread and Over/Under for College Football Week 8
It’s State week and here are the odds, a prediction, how to watch plus all you need to know for Michigan football vs. Michigan State.
It was clear soon after the Indiana game how focused Michigan football is on the Michigan State Spartans.
“It’s State Week” has been a common refrain for the Wolverines. Jim Harbaugh said that Michigan football is playing for a state championship and that the Spartans are “super tough.”
Michigan State also seems to save its best for the Wolverines. The Spartans have pulled some shocking upsets before and Michigan football can’t afford to overlook MSU.
Mel Tucker is gone. Harlon Barnett is the interim head coach and Mark Dantonio is a special assistant. The Spartans also have a new starting quarterback — former four-star Katin Houser who played well at times against Rutgers completing 18-of-29 passes for 133 yards and two touchdowns.
Special teams errors and turnovers doomed the Spartans who blew an 18-point lead against Rutgers last Saturday. It was a huge blow for Michigan State’s bowl hopes. However, a win over Michigan would help and would essentially save the season.
This is their Super Bowl and Michigan football needs to match that energy, especially with a bye week next week. At any rate, he’s the key info for Michigan football vs. Michigan State.

According to DraftKings, Michigan football is a 24.5-point favorite against the Spartans. The over/under is 48. The money line is -2400 for the Wolverines as well as +1200 for Michigan State.

Michigan football vs. Michigan State Players to watch
J.J. McCarthy — Michigan
McCarthy is making a name for himself in the Heisman Trophy race and this will be another chance for the quarterback to add to his resume. He’s never going to get 30-40 passes per game. But if he keeps making eye-popping plays and being incredibly efficient, he’s got a chance. He also made some incredible throws last week — throws few in college football can make.
Nate Carter — Michigan State
Houser is going to have to play well and take care of the football for the Spartans to have a shot. Michigan State is turning the ball over 2.5 times per game. Houser has just one interception in 45 attempts so far and he’s also completing 60 percent of his throws.
Carter is averaging 4.7 yards per carry and has 529 rushing yards, as well as 55 yards receiving with 10 receptions. There are some talented pass catchers such as Jaron Glover and Montorie Foster, but Michigan State has to be balanced or it will be trouble.
Michigan football vs. Michigan State prediction against the spread
Michigan State is going to be fired up for this night game. The crowd will be electric and as I said, this will be their national title game.
The Wolverines have to be wary. They have to be ready for a fight and this is such a trap game. College football history is littered with rivals pulling upsets and it wouldn’t be the first time Michigan State beat a highly-ranked, heavily-favored Michigan team.
However, I don’t think the Spartans will be able to sustain success for four quarters. Michigan is too good up front and too good on defense. MSU is tough against the run and McCarthy will need to run the show.
Blake Corum will get in the end zone, while McCarthy will account for 2-3 touchdowns in a 31-10 win for the Wolverines. Sparty will do enough to keep it interesting and cover the spread.
