According to a new report, a new contract for Michigan football head coach Jim Harbaugh could come “sooner rather than later.”

For months, I’ve been saying that Michigan football needs to give Jim Harbaugh a contract extension, regardless of the mess with the NCAA.

The idea that Michigan football was holding up the contract extension because of that is so insane to me. Why let the NCAA hold you hostage? In my opinion, it was a mistake to give Harbaugh the three-game suspension.

An even bigger mistake would be failing to make Harbaugh the highest-paid coach in the Big Ten. Heck in all of college football.

What Kirby Smart has done is spectacular. But nobody has a harder job in college football than Jim Harbaugh, who has won with one hand tied behind his back on the recruiting trail.

Harbaugh has won two straight Big Ten titles and has a team worthy of being in the national title conversation for the second year in a row.

Simply put, Harbaugh is as good as it gets in college football and he needs to be paid like it. According to Chris Balas of The Wolverine, that could happen, “Sooner than later.”

Michigan football has to get a deal done with Jim Harbaugh

You’re crazy if you think NFL teams won’t come calling. Harbaugh is one of the best head coaches in pro or college football and he’s proved that. Not many dudes have coached a team to a Super Bowl and the College Football Playoff.

In fact, there’s only one: Jim Harbaugh.

Yes, he hasn’t won a national title, but Michigan football needs to pay Harbaugh the going rate, which is well above his current salary, which ranks fourth in the Big Ten.

Frankly, even if Michigan paid Harbaugh $50 million a year, he’d be worth every penny. He’s made more money for the Michigan Wolverines than we can possibly imagine these past nine years and if the Warde Manuel wants to avoid another offseason embarrassment, he’ll get this deal done.

It should have been done yesterday. Hell, if Manuel had a clue it would have been done months ago. But as they say, there is no time like the present.
