In our latest Michigan Wolverines news roundup, Urban Meyer takes a shot at the Michigan football schedule, plus more.

It seems that Urban Meyer couldn’t resist the chance to criticize Michigan football this week as he was asked about non-conference schedules and took exception to who the Michigan Wolverines played during non-conference play.

Ohio State, of course, is playing at Notre Dame this week in a matchup of top-10 teams. OSU also played the  Irish last year in Columbus. Michigan football, on the other hand, hasn’t played a Power-5 opponent in non-conference play in 2022 or 2023.

However, that was the first time that’s happened in decades, and in 2024, the Texas Longhorns are coming to the Big House, so Meyer’s point doesn’t really hit home.

"“Look at the team up in Ann Arbor. You shouldn’t be allowed to play that schedule,” Meyer said on a YouTube video. “Georgia is playing a schedule that, at the end of the day, you’re supposed to be penalized for that, and they’re not. So why would Ohio State play this game? Well, because it’s the right thing to do, it’s for the fans, it’s for the good of the game. It’s for everybody.”"

I agree with Meyer that we should see more marquee non-conference matchups and in the 12-team playoff era, I believe we will. The Michigan Wolverines have scheduled plenty of tough opponents over the years. 2022 and 2023 were weak years, but also exceptions to the rule.

Michigan Wolverines injury updates for Rutgers

Michigan football has been battling injuries throughout the 2023 season in the secondary. Will Johnson has only played about 10 snaps so far this season. Makari Paige started last week, but Rod Moore has also been out for the Michigan Wolverines.

Yet, on Wednesday, defensive coordinator Jesse Minter hinted that Michigan could have all three back soon, maybe on Saturday.

“I think we’re really, really close to having a full tilt back there,”  Minter said. “So … we’ll leave it at that. “It will be — hopefully — fun to see the guys back out there.”

Next. 3 keys to a win over Rutgers. dark

If true, that would be great news for the Wolverines who could use all hands on deck for the start of Big Ten play against Rutgers.
