Mind the turnover battle

I fully expect Michigan football to air it out more this season. The Wolverines have one of the best quarterbacks in the Big Ten, plus a bunch of talented pass-catchers.

However, the offense still needs to protect the ball. J.J. McCarthy was spectacular at that last season, outside of the playoff loss to TCU. He threw two interceptions in that game. There was also a fumble near the goal line.

Those takeaways are the reason Michigan lost the game and it can’t allow East Carolina to hang around and one way to do that is by turning the ball over.

East Carolina didn’t have a single turnover in the last seven games of the 2022 season. They also averaged 1.5 takeaways per game last season. Mason Garcia will be making his first start at quarterback for the Pirates, so their ball security might not be as good.

But if there is one way for ECU to hang around in this game, it’s turnovers and as long as the Wolverines avoid giving the ball away, they should cruise to a victory.
