5 things we have learned from Michigan Football fall camp
Michigan football is through a couple of weeks of fall camp and here are five things we have learned about the Wolverines up to this point.
Even though access to Michigan football practices during fall camp is extremely limited, we continue to learn more and more about the 2023 Wolverines.
Michigan football just welcomed the Big Ten Network to their practice for their annual preview episode, something the network does with every Big Ten team.
Coming out of that, it’s hard not to feel optimistic about this Michigan football team after hearing some of the things that Jim Harbaugh said in his interview with the Big Ten Network.
Other players and Michigan football coaches have met with the media during fall camp, so that tells us a lot, plus some of the inside reporting that’s coming out of Ann Arbor too.
Taking it all in, here are five things we have learned since the start of Michigan football fall camp.
J.J. McCarthy is on the rise
Not many outside of the Michigan football orbit, besides those that actually know ball, want to give McCarthy much credit for what happened last season.
But McCarthy isn’t just some game manager. He’s one of the most talented quarterbacks in the country. He also had just seven turnovers last season in his first year as a starter.
Everything we have heard since the spring also suggests that McCarthy has taken the next step. You’d expect him to as a second-year starter and third-year quarterback.
Even though McCarthy didn’t play a ton as a freshman, he played in some really big spots and delivered some crucial plays.
I’ve always thought that McCarthy would take the next step once the game started to slow down for him. There were times last year when he passed up some easy completions by trying to do too much or he just missed things.
It happens to all quarterbacks, especially first-year starters. McCarthy is healthier than he was last season and while J.J. taking the next step has been anticipated, it sounds like it’s happened.
